Urbana, IL Air Conditioning: Types of Air Conditioning Systems

Air conditioning systems have been around for a long time, and not all air conditioners are alike. In Urbana IL, air conditioning units can be packaged models, split systems, or even ductless systems. There is no “one size fits all” air conditioning system, and different types of systems fit different needs depending on the customer. Let’s take a look at the different types available.

  • Split systems. Split system air conditioners are among the most popular types in the U.S., consisting of two separate components, one inside, and another outside the house. The inside unit contains an evaporator, which absorbs heat out of the air inside and a fan or blower that circulates cold are through a series of ducts. The outside unit contains a condenser coil, which releases the heat into the air, and a compressor that moves refrigerant through the system.
  • Packaged systems. Packaged systems do the same thing that split systems do, except that their components are not divided in two. A single attached unit carries the evaporator, condenser, compressor and blower, pulling warm air out of the house and cool air in through a series of ducts. Packaged systems can usually be found on the roof of the house, or on a concrete stand somewhere near the foundation.
  • Ductless systems. As their title implies, ductless systems don’t use ducts. Instead, they use multiple indoor units, each placed in a different room, or area and all connected to an outdoor unit. They’re useful in houses where there isn’t a lot of wall space for ductwork, as well as allowing users to cool individual sections of their houses instead of the whole thing.
  • Heat pumps. Heat pumps follow the same basic principle as split systems, though they also function as a heater in the wintertime. They pull heat out of the house and release it outside, then pump heat in during the cold months through the same system. Heat pumps are fairly unusual in Urbana, IL because they don’t work especially well in the long winters.
