Air Cleaners

Selecting an air cleaner for your home can be difficult if you don’t know much about these types of systems. While brand and model are obviously important considerations, it’s equally important that you know what types of pollutants and contaminants you need to target. This can all seem like an overwhelming task, so it’s important that you seek the advice of the Champaign–Urbana area air cleaning experts at Lanz Heating & Cooling before making any final decisions.

One of the first decisions you’ll have to make is whether you would like a mechanical or electronic air cleaner. Each of these types has its own unique benefits and drawbacks, so factoring everything in is critical before even reviewing the various models.

Mechanical Air Cleaners

Traditional mechanical air cleaners usually use HEPA filters to clean your home’s air. HEPA filters are able to remove 99.97% of all airborne particles measuring 0.3 microns or greater. While these filters are also capable of removing some smaller particles, they don’t do so at such a high success rate.

Given that most of the cost comes from buying new replacement filters, the operation of a mechanical air cleaner is generally inexpensive when compared to the electronic counterparts.

Mechanical air cleaners are a viable option for most people whose main concerns are allergens or viral and bacterial pollutants. The particles these air contaminants produce are large enough to be caught by a HEPA filter.

Electronic Air Cleaners

Instead of using a HEPA filter to trap particles like mechanical systems, electronic air cleaners remove particles from your home’s air using electrostatic attraction. As air enters the system, particles are charged by an ionizer which attracts them to elements inside the unit, separating them from the fresh air that’s pumped back in to your home for you to breathe.

While mechanical systems are great for common, larger particles, electronic air cleaners are better at removing smaller particles. Many homeowners find that using a combination of both systems is their best option for maintaining healthy air inside their homes.

While the cost of electronic air cleaners is in line with other types of air cleaning systems they can be more expensive in the long run because they have to be constantly fed electricity to operate. If you only need to target larger particles, the added expense may not make sense.
